Thirty One Cross Town Wallet vs. Every Wear Wallet Review

Before I got this Cross Town Wallet, I used my Every Wear Wallet which is now discontinued. The Every Wear Wallet was a clutch with straps so you could wear it as a shoulder bag or cross body. I purchased this new model to see how well I'd like it knowing how much I loved the previous model.

Well, they slipped down a few notches in my book. First, I'll talk about the Every Wear Wallet.

This clutch had a foldover button snap closure with external zipper pocket. It was a nice size in hand as a clutch as well as a hanging cross body accessory. Because it was a clutch, it hung nicely when the purse was opened. It was like having a shelf on your shoulder. When opened, you didn't worry about something falling out. I could easily fit my iphone 5s in the external zipper pocket, a pen in the main compartment with a ton of room to spare inside for other things.

The main compartment zips completely shut on three sides with a flap that goes over the top and buttons on the two corners. It made for a very secure wallet/purse. The wallet itself was lightweight and the size made it an easy to carry clutch.

The only con to this product was the two little loops that attach the bag to its straps. They aren't the strongest. If you overload your wallet/bag the straps will break off. Because I was aware of this problem, I was careful with how much I stored in here. To date, this is still my favorite wallet to use by Thirty One. I hope they bring this back with stronger loops.

The Cross Town Wallet is smaller and more square versus rectangular. There are strong magnets that keep this wallet closed which is good and bad. It's strong so I don't worry about the wallet popping open. But, it's awkward. If your hands are full and you need to whip your wallet open with one free hand.  There are four circular magnets on each corner to keep the wallet closed.

This wallet does not offer as many card slots as the Every Wear Wallet. The security strap to hold down the cards is nice but again, cumbersome to use one handed. Imagine carrying your toddler at checkout and trying to get to your wallet with one arm and hand free. I had to lay my wallet on the counter, use one hand to hold one side down while I pop open the wallet to get my money/card out.

Because this is a literal flap wallet, you cannot use this as a shelf on your shoulder like the every wear wallet. You can't just chuck stuff inside and close it and move on. The sides are open. The two zipper pockets are great but not nearly as wide as the every wear wallet.  The strap to this wallet is made of a cotton webbing material. The Every Wear has a leatherette type strap which is a little more dressier.  The straps are connected to the wallet on opposite sides to help keep the wallet from flying open. Great security type feature but it felt really awkward when opening and getting to things inside. I felt like I was always having to dodge a strap. So, unlike the every wear wallet where you can hang it open and get what you need, this wallet had a strap in the way all the time.
The easiest way to get to things was to lay it on the counter and then open it up with slack on the strap.

This wallet is good for going out in the evenings to carry bare minimum essentials. This isn't a wallet I'd recommend for busy moms on the go or for those who carry a lot of cards (rewards, credit, medical, etc.)

You also would need to check how you carry it. Depending on which side is against your body, you could be opening the wallet where the ID pocket side faces down. Be careful for slippery ID cards that could possibly pop out. I doubt it'll happen, but you never know. My suggestion to Thirty One, make the opening on the side, not the top of the ID pocket.

This has a wristlet strap hidden in the spine of the wallet which makes converting a breeze. If you're quickly trying to switch from a crossbody to wristlet, you still have to take the straps off or hide them in the zipper pockets. I used this wallet for about 2 weeks and ended up going back to the Every Wear.

Overall, both are good sturdy wallets. They are sewn well with strong components (zippers, magnets, straps, etc.) It's really a matter of preference. I like the Every Wear. I really hope it makes a come back in different prints.

What is your opinion of the magnets? I worry about carrying my phone and credit cards around 4 magnets.

Hi Teresa,
The magnets are just in the upper corners which is away from the main compartments and card holders. They are small and not extremely strong so I think it should be ok.

Thank you for your comment!

My original post mentions that the magnets ARE strong. They are strong enough that you need to hold one side down in order to separate the wallet but I don't feel they are strong enough to demagnetize your credit cards or impact your cell phone adversely.
